In the book Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond tries to explain his theory on how the world came to be, with Europe and North America being prosperous and wealthy while continents like Africa are left in extreme poverty. He explains this with three words, guns, germs, and steel. I’ve often stayed up wondering why, in nearly every continent, men are given all the power while women are second in command, just before children and the GPS. I think this too can be explained in three words, Gods, wads, and Tila Tequila. Gods meaning religion, wads being the profit motive behind women’s oppression, and the last part is Tila Tequila where I’ll talk about how women don’t only agree with and promote their own oppression but they think it’s “hot”. This is the first part in my three part series trying to explain why oppression of women still exists.
Gods
*Disclaimer* In this post I’m discussing Christianity because it’s the most practiced religion in North America. I don’t, nor will I ever, claim to know anything about Islam, Buddism, Scientology, etc.
Religion has and still plays a huge part in why women are second class. I’m not debating whether there is or isn’t a God, I’m not here to argue with anyone’s God, because it’s irrelevant to my point. All I know is that the Bible exists and that it’s the best selling book in North America. I’m also under the impression that the Bible has many followers and many take its word as God’s word. That’s 78.5% of Americans and 70.3% of Canadians. Either way if you’re a woman that means you are absolutely, positively fucked.
Okay, let’s go way, way back. To when religion was invented. Religion was invented for one sole purpose, power. Power over both men and women, but mostly women. When trying to convince people that you should be given the power to oppress and rule over them, what better reference can you get than God? Gwynne Dyer says it better than I ever could, but I’m going to try and simplify his theory. The world begins, BOOM, people evolve into what we call cavemen, the goal is survival of the species, which means reproduction is very important therefore women are respected for their reproductive abilities and their gathering of plants and things to eat, but men are also respected for their hunting abilities. Both genders bring things to the table and are thus equal. BOOM, women invent agriculture and farming, there is no longer a need for hunting and men are put to the way side. This is the closest that our society got to matriarchal society though it wasn’t necessarily matriarchal because women never oppressed men, the genders just naturally worked together. These “autonomous villages” as Gwynne Dyer calls them, became the norm of upper Africa and Lower Europe. Due to the success of these villages there was a population boom, villages join with each other and resources get thin. What to do when you have little resources and lots of people? Two things, there needs to be some sort of order (invention of hierarchies) and you need to fight to get resources from other states. FINAL BOOM, the invention of militarization and religion. Religion came into existence for many reasons, children is a big reason. Around that time it was difficult to know if a child was yours if you were a man, to stop that monogamy was invented (brought to you by God). Once you have monogamous relationships in a patriarchy you can decide how many children you have and know that they are, for sure, yours. This was pushed on because with militarization meant you needed a lot of soldiers, a state couldn’t afford to lose women for the fact that they provided more children and more soldiers to that state, so emphasis was put on the importance of having male children. So just to do a review, men finally had some importance to a society after thousands of year of being unimportant. Pretty good, right? Another reason religion helped the leaders of the states keep power was because it convinced the soldiers to fight for an otherwise unjust cause, if this was just the pre-life to an even greater life than hell yeah I’ll go fight in your war. Religion was an easy sell to the male citizens of these states, I imagine the conversation went down something like this:
Male Leader: “Hello citizens of (insert name of ancient civilization here), here’s how things will be from now on, men will be given all the power in the household..”
Male Citizen: “But why, that makes no sense?”
Male Leader: “Because you will be able to enter into a monogamous relationship meaning you control how many children you have and when, all your possessions and name will be passed down though the sons of the family and you will be able to control the women of our state, this will all happen if you just allow me to control the whole state, deal?”
Male Citizen: “I don’t know…”
Male Leader: “God said so”
Male Citizen: “Where do I sign?”
It worked out very well as a war tactic and from then on life changed dramatically. For a way better explanation of that theory check out Gwynne Dyer’s documentary on it called the Human Race.
The bible has never taken too kindly to the womenfolk. It’s hard to say why, but it could be blamed on Eve’s hunger for knowledge (sorry, her easily swayed, childish mind) in which God responds with a “you fucking bitch!” and rewards her with eternal suffering for all women (which includes the pain of childbirth, periods, and to serve under man forever, what a gift basket!). The rest of the bible follows that same format, women suck because they always need someone to look after them or else they’ll get into their conniving ways, all seducing and what not. The story is told over and over again and the message is quite clear, women can’t be trusted. The women that can be trusted are rarely talked about (in any other way than how you would describe cattle). They are property, plain and simple. I normally wouldn’t give two shits and a rat’s ass about any of this, there are plenty of places, magazines, and t.v. shows that say the exact same thing as the bible and I don’t waste my time with them, but when 70% of the people around me believe this to be the word of God, that scares me.
There isn’t any reference to human beings as a whole, as far as God is concerned men are the only real human beings, women are in a limbo between human beings and animals. They are treated and regarded as such, with the only few traits that relate to man, but the mental capacity and will power of something sub-human. Even the physical traits of women are never described in relation to men, emphasis is always put on the things that are so different from men, hair, breasts, and shape are all talked about. There isn’t much wiggle room for the women of the bible their only purpose is their biological one, they can be mothers, wives, daughters and sisters, you won’t be described as much else if you are a woman, while men are described as prophets, kings, farmers, carpenters, and every other job under the sun. In other words, they are described by their accomplishments rather than by their biological role.
That reflects perfectly in modern times, how many times in the real world are women boiled down to two things, wife material or a good fuck. The bible invented that dichotomy for god’s sake! The virgin and the whore. Where else but the bible could they create a virgin mother, the epitome of absolute innocence, perfect. But wait, a man has needs. Enter the whore, now that is perfect. Our view of women today is a transformation of the idealistic realities in the bible. It’s terrifying to see how long this dichotomy has been around and is still incredibly prominent today. Women are either baby making machines or prostitutes, except in the bible there was a clear distinction between the two, a woman would never be both. But today, the demands for women to be both virgin and whore are visible all around us, especially in the media.
Tradition is incredibly hard (if not impossible) to break, especially if you get that tradition from God’s mouth. Which is why this view of women has lasted so long and will continue until some dramatic change.
